UPDATE: Split Rock Station CLOSED in Suffern

I drove by and my wife checked their facebook. Due to lack of clientele, they had to close the Suffern, NY  location.
I feel it a shame because the food and service was excellent.

Fill the Pit Friday: Quiznos

Sandwich shop, Hero shop, Sub shop, or Wedge shop. No matter the vernacular there are plenty of them and each with their own gimmick, etc.

Quiznos makes and toasts there subs/hero/wedge .. I grew up calling it a hero because it goes on an italian hero roll , which was just a personal sized loaf of Italian bread.

Most of the time when i go to such places I stick with teh tried and true. either tuna salad or turkey. Let's face it, many times the meat used isnt the best, but who can argue when it comes to price when filling the pit.

What do you look for when going to Quiznos?

Fill the Pit Friday: Popeye's

When you have a bonafide hunger you look for a bonafide meal :-)

The battle for chicken has always been KFC and Popeye's. When I want chicken with a kick, nothing beats Popeye's with a side of dirty rice, oh wait they changed it to the politically correct Cajun rice :-)

The fish is decent, but as I warn many people; this is fast food. Just like going to a diner, remember it's just a diner. do not expect more than what tey are good at making.
If you love a restaurants jambalaya, then don't order it at popeye's unless you just need to fill the pit :-)

What is your favorite dish at Popeye's when you look to fill the pit?

Fill the Pit Friday: OutBack SteakHouse

Many times when people are looking for steak or pork they take a walk out into the outback ;-)

It wouldn't be a night at the outback without the Bloomin' Onion , i aslo like coconut shrimp.
As for the MEAT: their steaks are good as well as teh prok or lamb :-)
Remember it is a chain so don't expect Smith and Wollenski's and on the flipside it isn't a Denny's either ..

What is your go to dish when a walking matilda in the outback?

Buon Appetito!

Fill the Pit Friday: Nathan's

It would behoove this Brooklyn Boy to mention Brooklyn's own:

I was born and bred in B'klyn, and you do not go near Coney Island without stopping in at least once. :-)

Many people may not know or remember but Nathan's used to also make frog's legs. They had this big round bowl like frier.. :-)

Hot dogs and the famous fries and lemonade of course. Nothing beats em. A little pricey these days but you need to experience it.

Buon Appetito !!

Fill the Pit Friday: McDonald's

Just like Burger King, McDonald's is the fast food standby.

The 2 "eens" apply to Mcdonalds as well. (Protein and caffeine)

For me, while on the road, either a simple cheeseburger or Quarter Pounder "Royale" with cheese and a cup of coffee hits the spot and wakes me up for that long drive.

What about you?

Asian Bistro - King of Prussia, PA

A diamond in the rough and in the oddest of locations. :-)
My son is working in PA and on the edge of his apartment complex, we found an OASIS.

540 Shoemaker Road  : Asian Bistro.

NOTE: The Compleat Stategist, 580 Shoemaker Road, one of a few stores for the avid gamer. and just down the road a place to eat :-)

This bistro runs the gambit: Sushi , Thai and Chinese.

My son had the pad thai which he thought was good , it appeared a wee bit watery, but he said the flavor was good.
I had the "sechuan beef", which was good as well .. a lot of peppers and onions which leads me to believe its probably made similar to their pepper steak ;-)
This did not detract from the meal, we went there expecting to only fill the pit, which we did, but the pleasant surprise was that it was very enjoyable. They put care in the presentation as well and the staff are very friendly.
I would definitely revisit and eat there again

Split Rock Station, Suffern NY.

I spent my birthday going from watering hole to watering hole. :-)
Dinner Stop was at Split Rock Station to try their BBQ.

As I said in my previous blog about getting Defiant, Rockland's BBQ choices are severely limited and lacking. I have to say that SRS is far better than Bailey's and a close second to Defiant.
The Pit Sampler is huge and enough for 2 people maybe more.

It comes with: (left) Ribs, pulled pork, brisket and
(right) 2 sides: we chose corn souffle and sweet potato fries.

The ribs were tasty and didn't fall off the bone but it didn't need much coaching to do so..
The Brisket was very tender and much better and the pulled pork was very moist as well.

All in all the combination was a hit. :-)

Our 3 kids got the burgers.. Texas and Western burgers:

2 Western: frizzled onions, crunchy bacon, cheddar and drenched in BBQ sauce
1 Texas: chili, raw onions and cheddar

Nothing was left on their plates, my wife and I brought the rest of the sampler home.

I was wished a very happy Birthday and given my first drink free, which I thought was very kind.
Thank you Seth and SRS for giving me an option for when I am in Suffern.

Buon Appetito

Fill the Pit Friday: Long John SIlver's

If you are going to do fish as a fast food LJS is one of those places.. if given a choice I probably go there than McD'x etc :-)

Long John Silvers - click here

Fish or clan strips is probably the better deal.. but the allure will always be the hush puppies..at least for me :-)

They of course have platters etc. but for $5 you get a decent portion to fill the pit .. and after all thats the reason we go to these types of places.. :-)

I seem to remember them having mash potatoes, as a side.. but I do not see it any longer. I mention that because when we were new parents with our first born we were at a mall stopped in for a bite realized our young one was still hungry.. so we got him mashed potatoes .. to this day he is always still hungry :-)

What do you get when you go to Long John's?

Buon Appetito!

Warwick Thai Restaurant - Warwick, NY

I went out for a meal with one of my Masonic Brothers, just before lodge.
Our lodge is in Warwick so we opted to try this restaurant.

For a Thai restaurant, the menu is slightly expansive. This can be good or bad and it all depends on the person sitting down to eat.
I found some of the prices a bit high, but then again it is Warwick ;-)

I was slightly disappointed, because I wanted to try the noodle dish listed:
When I ordered it, however, I was told it was a soup noodle dish. No where in the "Noodles" section that it is in nor description, above, does it say SOUP.

I went with:
I asked for it spicy, and I enjoyed the meal. It was a pleasant surprise, after my initial disappointment.
My Brother ordered the Penang Curry, which looked a bit watery to me,. He enjoyed his meal as well, though he did splash it on his good shirt a few times ;-) I told him it looked a bit watery, more like the Massaman than Penang consistency i am used to seeing, but what do i know.. :-p

I would definitely go back and try a few other dishes, when the opportunity arises.

Buon Appetito!

Fill the Pit Friday: KFC

KFC or Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a staple amongst Fast Food Chicken.

When you go to you get Original or Extra Crispy ? The $5 fill ups are a very good buy.

I like dark meat so depending if i go original or extra crispy it will always be all dark meat. Way back in the stone age, mid to late 70's KFC had BBQ which was good for a kid in Brooklyn. It didn't last long and I believe a few decades back they tried to bring it back.

Fast Food was a treat for those of us growing up that had little money and ate whatever was put in front of us. A paper route or anything that allowed us to afford our own slice of pizza or burger lead us to the road of fast food. Being able to get a few pieces of chicken was no different. and KFC was the place to go.
Not many remember the BBQ days, but I do..

What are your memories or the Colonel?

Fill the Pit Friday: IHOP

International House of Pancakes is a familiar stop for breakfast. But they do serve other food.

Early on in Fill the pit I noted that sometimes you go to a place specifically for 1 type of food. IHOP for me is one such place. Yes we all go there for pancakes and the unlimited coffee, that's a no brainer ;-)

However, they do have one meal I enjoy and that is chicken(country) fried steak with sausage(country) gravy. Every once in a while I get that urge and IHOP is the place to get it.

Smothered in rich country gravy, our 8 oz. beef steak is served with tasty mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

Besides pancakes (breakfast), what do you eat at IHOP?

Buon Appetito!

Fill the Pit Friday: Hardee's

When I find a place that has a patty melt I just have to try it out

Hardee's - click here

Finding one in NY can be a chore if improbable. However, while on the road and you just need to fill that pit and the road sign up ahead says Hardee's. I would definitely request the Bacon Velveeta patty melt.

How about you?

Ocean Empire Restaurant - Pomona, NY

I have lived in Rockland for about 18 years now. I have seen Ocean Empire on my trips through route 45 and 202. and never ventured to try as I was always headed someplace ..

I have to say, I wish I had tried them earlier, they are very decent.
I was a fan of Shen Wang in New City until the changed their "style" of cooking. Shen Wang is very clean and the food is Ok but it was much better and less many not too long ago.

Ocean Empire is a place I would go back to.. I had a very good meal, good portions and decent price.

I had the lunch special :
Hot and sour soup, Garlic beef with white rice. and we had steamed dumplings ..
My wife got the pork and mixed vegetables and my daughter got the sesame chicken.

Hot and sour soup is very tricky for many places that are "americanized". There's a consistency and taste as well as the mushrooms etc that should be in it.
Ocean had it right:
hot and sour soup

steamed dumplings

The steamed dumplings where nice.. not Cantonese or Chinatown style, not the thick dough dumplings.. (which are good) this was in between.. and they had the broth inside so it made it that much more tasty.

beef and garlic sauce
The pork and beef dishes were not "watery" or soupy as they can be in some places. This was very refreshing..

pork and mixed vegetables

Easter is upon us. What's for dinner?

My family and I have a tradition of eating rabbit for Easter.
I have been making "Coniglio Cacciatore" every Easter for 18 years, ever since my eldest son's first Easter.

This was last year's table:
This years Setting:

The usual staple is lamb, but I  prefer our "coney" tradition. Yes, Coney Island means Rabbit Island.

What do you make?

My Easter story:
I was very young and we were going to my grandmother's, dad's mom, house. Before we went into the dining room; he warned me about the capozelle (dad pronounced it capo zeal) . Lambs head . so there it was proudly displayed on teh table no big deal right?
Until I watched my grandmother and other relatives fought over who got the eyes. :-)

Do you have a favorite Easter story? Share it, please.

Buona Pasqua e Buon Appetito

Fill the Pit Friday: Golden Krust

Just about every ethnicity has a fast food chain. Jamaican is no different :-)
Golden Krust bakery will do in a pinch when you are looking  for a quick bite.

Golden Krust Bakeries - click here

I LOVE West Indian/Jamaican Food, so I am very particular where I go and what I get and it depends on the atmosphere and a quick gage of the place.
When at a Golden Krust, I usually always only get one of the patties (beef/chicken) patties with coco bread.

Remember fast food and I need to fill the pit :-)

What will you get at a Golden Krust bakery?

Buon Appetito!

Portuguese BBQ in Spring Valley NY

The day before my son was headed back up to Oswego, for college, we set out to do some shopping and eating. We found ourselves finding, tucked away in a small strip mall just off route 45:

Portuguese Churrasqueira - click here

The portions are great and they also have a take out menu and deliver!

The eat-in experience is very nice and you are given bread/salad and a bowl of olives, in a spicy oil dressing. The salad is a simple dressing of oil and vinegar, which being part Italian, I miss at times. So many places now get so FANCY with their choices.. one forgets the simpler things in life.

We started out with a small tasting of the codfish pastries .. it was so soft and moist you would have thought it a potato croquette.

Then we ordered out main dishes, Rooster stew and rice and 2 mixed BBQ plates.

The rooster stew can feed 2 people that is for sure!

The mixed grill comes with fries, rice, chicken, steak and pork medalions
and ribs.
The steak was perfectly cooked at medium, nice red center and tender.

Many of their dishes are sized 1 person or 2 person dishes. This was indeed a great find and it is very tucked away. Be careful pulling into the plaza. It's worth the trip or ordering out.

Buon Appetito!

Yama Ya in New City NY.

The town I live in doesn't have many places i like to frequent and blog about.

is one of the exceptions.
click to go to website

Last Friday, Sir Terry Pratchett, took a walk with Mort and we decided to honor him by having a non traditional meal.

I was remiss in taking photos of the special appetizer given to us. My dinner guests were my wife and our very dear friend. they both gave me hell for forgetting.

But here is what we did have to eat :

This is Kaki Fried :  fried oyster appetizer .. it was very tasty.
Just enough for us to have 2 each. Otherwise it may have been a battle royale to see who got seconds :-)
This was the live clam. The presentation was nice and all edible including the thinly sliced lemon wedges. I have to admit it added thats certain texture and zing.
Very reminiscent of a ceviche.

Our entrees were just as delicious:
from the Sushi platters.

To the cooked maki rolls, there's something for everyone.

If you are so inclined they are right next to the BowTie cinema.
So you could have a dinner and a movie. We just had Dinner...

Buon Appetito.

Nothing beats ice cream and a burger.

Fat Thursday - Warsaw Deli Stamford CT

I learned about Fat Thursday when I worked in Stamford Connecticut.
I frequented the polish deli, Warsaw Deli. just off Washington Blvd.

Warsaw Deli - click here

You name it they have it. Everything is a sausage, it's heaven.
Fat Thursday is just before lent and you eat as many Paczki (fried donut) as possible. I prefer the unglazed paczki. :-)

What is Paczki Day? - click here

One of my favorite things to get is stuffed duck sandwich on a roll with mayo. OK i am hungry now.
Also, zurec which is a white sausage soup.

Zurek - click here

The available soup is at their discretion , so its hit or miss if they made it.
It is not served in a bread bowl (per the link) , unless they changed. :-)
You will not be disappointed by what you can find in this deli.

Fill the Pit Friday: Chili's

So C was a little harder..
I wanted to list a place i have actually frequented more than once and most people will go to. once we go through the alphabet .. I may include the others..

Chili's - click here

What is your go to meal ?

For me:  it's a toss up between the bacon burger or the beef fajita and  beer. Not sure I would bother with their BBQ.

When it comes to BBQ and Beer... Be Defiant!

My wife and I have been going to Defiant Brewery for years. We were lucky enough to be there for their debut of smoked/BBQ wings many many years ago. Their menu has grown and it is just as good, as when they first "toyed" with the idea. We went out Friday Feb. 6, 2015 and were NOT disappointed :-)

Defiant - Click Here

Remember when I said it isn't the look of the place or the flatware. Well, this is no frills great BBQ.

This is the Ample Sampler and is a great meal for 2, or a snack for 3.

Top row, left to right:

Wings, brisket, ribs and pulled pork. They use a dry rub which is very tasty and needs NO help. In case you like it saucy, they give you squeeze bottles: 1 hot sauce and one BBQ sauce. If you do not have teeth, no worries, you don't need any. All the meat is moist and just melts in your mouth. The obligatory roll of paper towels sits in front of you. (No respecting BBQ would give you anything more) :-)

Bottom row, left to right:

Corn Bread and pickles are included, choice of 3 sides: we got the mac and cheese, brisket chili and coleslaw. All great choices. The chili is tasty and has some good heat to it.

The knife isn't even necessary, the brisket, fell apart when touched by the fork :-)
We have several places in Rockland that "claim" to be smokehouses. If you ask me, they pale in comparison to Defiant's menu. And what better way to enjoy good BBQ then to wash it down with a good brew, of which they have many..
Please don't just take my word for it , go and give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. :-)

Buon Appetito
